The Shape of Water - 8/10

3 billboards - 9/10
best film I've seen in years. Beautifully shot, great soundtrack and wonderfully acted by all in involved. I'm sure it will pick up a couple of Oscars.

Yet to meet someone that's not enjoyed 3 billboards. What was the last film that was universally liked by pretty much everyone?

I was waitin on the bird coming out the loo and some needy boy with the chunkiest gold bracelet announced to anyone that it was a load of fucking shite. So not quite universal Pete.
It was East Kilbride though so

Saw The Post last night.
Good acting and all that but meh. I can see a lot of it going over peoples heads if you don't have some sort of knowledge of that time.

(02-03-2018, 09:41 AM)Alan Partridge Wrote: Saw The Post last night. What was the last great Spielberg film? Saving Private Ryan? Must be 20 years since that came out. They've not all been turkeys since then but the likes of Bridge of Spies is as good as it gets and, even then, like you say, all a bit meh.

Really enjoyed Three Billboards BUT clearly not as much as most on here. Would still give it an 8/10 but wouldn't say it was the best film I've seen in years tbh.
The acting was fantastic (Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell in particular must be Oscar favourites) but I just felt like it was lacking something. Not sure exactly what it was but there were periods where the intensity wasn't quite there and I think the random Aussie wife did get to me and take me out of the film at times. Enjoyed it but I'd still say I prefer In Bruges of McDonagh's films

I tend to watch all these hyped films well after the fact and tend to agree they are hyped.

Phantom Thread - 9/10 - A Hitchcock style masterpiece.

Watching this new Cloverfield movie now. It's all over the place. Chris O'Dowd in it

Spotlight - 8/10
As good as I remember it and always nice to see that mob taking a pasting
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, 7.5/10
Worth going to see I'd say. Bit anti-pc but at least there's some self reflection going on so that kinda balances it out. In terms of acting, I thought Dickson was the standout character; whether his or any other (McDormand's) are Oscar-worthy, I couldn't tell you. e: I see Rockwell has been nominated for an Oscar in this. ![]() Mildred was too contrived.

Legend 6.5/10
Ronnie's wee boy giggling away during his standup routine at their club.

Darkest Hour 8/10
