What a load of pish. Why would they get paid the same when the men's game brings in so much more money?

Think I'd normally agree with you, but does anyone know how big the discrepancy in finances is in the US? Men's football is less popular, and women's football more popular, there than here. Obviously the tournaments the men's team play in bring in more regardless, but they might have more of a case in the US than elsewhere.

Her winning the women's Balon D'Or shows how far off the pace women's football is. She played in about 20 games in the whole of 2019.

How would equal pay work? Isnt every footballer on a different contract?

Women's football is dreadful but if they're generating the same revenue as the men's team, they should get paid the same. I've no got a clue what the figures are though.

Fair enough. Do the men's team earn twice as much or is it more than that? My basic stance is that for as long as we live in a market economy, male athletes will earn more than women, but if the discrepancy in wages is greater than the discrepancy in income then that might justifiably be looked at.

Don't pay much attention to women's football personally, but do think there's probably a conversation worth having about why some people get so worked up over Rapinoe but are much less bothered about similarly arrogant male sports stars.

Loads of people do hate arrogant male sports stars to be fair. Neymar, Ronaldo etc. Notable difference being, they are genuinely amazing footballers.

I see Hendricks said she's 'overly liberal' - if that's the issue then, regardless of whether or not I agree, it makes more sense to me than having a problem with her being arrogant. Most sports stars are arrogant.

Tbh I don't know. I just googled US men's team revenue and this was the first thing that came up.

US Soccer said it pays the women's national team players a base salary of $100,000 per year, and an additional $67,500 to $72,500 per player as a salary for playing in the National Women's Soccer League. The women also have healthcare benefits and a retirement plan.
Conversely, players on the men's national team are paid by training camp call-ups, game appearances and through performance bonuses. The federation says the men have the ability to earn higher bonuses that the women. The collective bargaining agreements are not made public, and US Soccer did not provide details about the men's bonus structure.
USSF also says the men's team generates more revenue. The women's team generated $101.3m over the course of 238 games between 2009 and 2019 while the men generated $185.7m over 191 games, according to the federation.

There seems to be articles saying the woman's team generates more revenue, some that say they're about the same and some that say the men earn more.

Don't really understand how you can 'salary' an international player. Surely the squad changes from game to game? Are Scotland players salaried?

They may do it the same as other sports, e.g. cricket, where they centrally contract a number of players and share monies that way.

From what I remember, international footballers get appearance fees and their clubs get payments as a type of insurance.

People hate Neymar and Ronaldo for how they behave on the pitch though.

The same people hate Rapinoe for using her platform to make a stand to campaign against racism, sexism and gender inequality, when she should shut up and be grateful that women's sport gets any coverage in the first place.

That's the 'notable difference' to me.
