I'm all for keeping Devlin for a bit of continuity and don't see why he wouldn't be a potential captain, but he absolutely should not be one of our highest earners.

I wouldn't even be that bothered about losing him tbh. McEntee could do his job and beyond that we need players who can actually play football. Keep him to avoid having a whole new midfield, if he stays then the captaincy isn't out of the question as a player who has been at the club a while and has quite a big personality, but don't pay him £10k a week ffs Get in a central midfielder who doesn't end up with the most tackles in the league because he's actually capable of helping to ensure we're the team that has the ball to begin with.

Tbf to Devlin, there was a stat going about showing all midfielders forward passing and he was about middle of the pack. Beni was the worst in the league IIRC.

But you watch a game and see so many pointless 5 yard passes from Cammy. I know McInnes loves him so if we keep him then fine, but I don’t think he’s hard to replace.

Beni keeps things moving though. Not sure the percentage direction of pass, but he’ll take one touch, move the ball, receive it back, shift it again quickly.

It was honestly painful watching Devlin trying to get the ball forward toward the end at Celtic Park

I get the 'most tackles in the league' thing, and tbf it's not only because his first touch is so bad that about 25% of those tackles are second touches, but I'd rather have a player who tackles a bit less and can play a bit of football alongside it. I know we couldn't afford him and he's injured anyway, but Leonard was a step up.

Aye, Beni’s use of the ball seemed a lot better going by the eye test, but statistically Devlin isn’t that negative.

The most tackles in the league thing doesn’t interest me at all. I don’t want that from a Hearts midfielder. Cameron and Hartley barely ever made a tackle (I know the games different now but still)

Wouldn’t be against keeping him from a continuity point of view but don’t really mind either way if he stays or goes. TBH I’d rather keep Devlin than Beni but neither of them are good enough to hold us to ransom.

It’s tricky because you do want some consistency with the squad but if we want to keep challenging I think we need to upgrade in basically every position. We massively overperformed for the quality of player we’ve got last season, we can‘t expect to keep doing that year on year so the player quality has to keep improving. Realistically the Old Firm wouldn’t pay money for anyone in our squad but the McInnes/Jamestown combination had us 10 minutes from winning the league. Maybe that can happen again but it’s more likely we get there by upgrading the majority of our starting team.

I was all for keeping him, but with the Ronseal rat gone, Devlin can fuck off too. A new era of midfielders who can pass the ball more than 10 yards beckons.
