Not seen Attenborough's latest show but I believe it or articles they've published around it reinforce his previous criticisms of overpopulation that are at best outdated, if not colonial.

The problem is he has (justifiably) built up a position where his views just become the accepted wisdom, so if you're criticising him it has to be publicly visible or it's a waste of time.

What are Attenborough's dodgy views on overpopulation? Is he a eugenics weirdo?

About 10 years ago he had a thing about not sending food to Africa because letting people starve in Ethiopia would be a good way to control the global population. Not sure what other examples he's talked about but remember that one being pretty grim.

Essentially the planet is dying because there are too many people, leading to too much energy consumption, so we need to have population control in 'overpopulated areas' (i.e. mainly Africa). When in reality, energy consumption in developed Western nations is doing far more damage despite the lower populations.

I think the organisation he was involved that pushed that stuff with has changed their stance tbf. Not sure if he has.

When we were in Geography, we were taught that developing countries accounted for most of the worlds overpopulation. They'd basically just keep having kids to survive; the more boys they had, the more work they could get done, the more crops they'd grow and harvest and the better they'd survive. 

Tie that in with the lack of contraception in poorer countries and folk would be shagging for fun and accidentally end up having a kid.

I wasn't accusing you of having done so. It was a reference to Attenborough's comments - no-one's denying that birth rates in Africa are high, the question is (questions are) whether that's got anything to do with the causes of pollution and how to respond to it (i.e. not, as Attenborough suggested, by withholding food from starving people).

Edit: when I say 'Africa', I obviously mean specific developing countries in Africa (as did Attenborough). In some African countries birth rates aren't that high.
