Part of this was what Dank and I were discussing last night on the Wings thread.

The UKIP leader when Trump was being discussed was saying that we need to understand why this is happening - people are seeing their continuities change and have concerns etc. and they are just being ignored.

He was shouted down and the hysterics began.

When you (not you, Walt) cut off, shout down and stifle debate from people who you don't agree with and, lets be honest, look down your nose at, you push them into these groups and echo chambers.

It is a problem there, it is a problem here as well. Not really sure what you can do about it now tbh.

If only any of this were true.

Take a look at the Brexit vote, the US election, and the German election. What did these three votes have in common? Anti-immigration rhetoric/parties/platforms did best in... areas which have very little immigration. Pro-immigration rhetoric/parties/platforms did best in... areas which have lots of immigration.

"People are seeing their communities change and have concerns etc". Most people who voted for Brexit, Trump or AfD aren't seeing their communities change. That's the whole point. They are, in many cases, seeing their communities neglected and failed - yet instead of voting for the left and desperately needed investment and housing, they then vote even further to the right! Go figure.

Take those two basic points - those who are anti-immigration tend to live in areas without much immigration, yet actually vote themselves and their communities poorer - then try applying them to rational debate. It's next to impossible to do so. No effort has been made to reason with these people because by and large, they cannot be reasoned with - albeit Corbyn is at least trying.

And in any case, the post Walter linked to wasn't about merely disaffected losers from capitalism. It was about Nazis. Nazis cannot be reasoned with; Nazis reject reason altogether. "But we need to reach out! It's a cry for help! These people have genuine concerns!" OK, try this exercise:

1. Hitler was bad

2. Hitler was good

3. The truth must be somewhere in between

But of course, it isn't. In the US especially, but the UK too, many of these 'grievances' aren't real at all. They're frequently as good as made up: by cynical beyond belief opportunistic bastards who couldn't give a shit about their nations, only about themselves.

Said opportunistic bastards either sucker the likes of it's shit with their nonsense - or alternatively, give licence for the likes of it's shit to air their ridiculous opinions. But either way, they cannot be reasoned with - and as we've seen with both Trump and Farage, giving them a platform only makes it worse. Far worse.
