I'm not saying it should be like anything man, I'm not demanding the papers start posting pictures of deid bodies so folk take it seriously.  

I am just commenting that I don't feel like we are living through what I seen on the TV when we were on our way to being like them.  But I don't work in hospitals  so all I'm seeing is folk sitting having picnics in the park, going for a stroll up Arthur's seat etc.  Maybe that was happening there too but it wasn't what I seen being reported to us.

You are allowed to go for walks and stop and have lunch now. That doesn't mean not taking it seriously.

Morph - the solemn reporting you saw of Italy was the British media's coverage of Italy which would be one story on the news among the other stories in Britain and the world. Of course in that case the BBC etc were showing the grim reality in Italy when they had 5 minutes to cover it, but the actual Italian media wouldn't have been wall-to-wall mourning 24/7.


What is all this nonsense on here about people not understanding what's going on btw? Everyone knows what's happening FFS. Is it just a perverse smugness that you've spent hours trawling twitter so must be better informed than joe public?

What is it that you think we should be told that isn't currently being said, out of interest?

There's something really patronising about thinking people aren't understanding the seriousness of the situation due to the news coverage.  We all see the death numbers. Most of our jobs are at risk. Most of us have vulnerable people we worry about. Everyone gets it and most are doing their part. You're going to get arseholes that just don't care but that's life.

I have issues with the government not being held to account by the media but I don't buy into this stuff about the situation being downplayed and the public being fooled.

If thinking that a very large proportion of the British public are stupid and selfish is patronising, then guilty as charged Overall I think most people are taking it seriously, but there are plenty who aren't.

I think your last sentence is interesting there, as to me it's contradictory - surely if the media are failing to hold the government to account, they are allowing them to present a massaged version of events to the public and downplay what's unfolded? I really don't think there is a general perception across the public that we are (or will be - the only reason we're not officially yet is because only hospital deaths are included in our current stats) the worst hit country in Europe.

Nah not aiming the second part at you mate, more a general view of a lot of the chat on here. Feel free to criticise the media's coverage of it but it's disingenuous to say you're doing so because nobody understands what's happening. Everyone knows we're fucked, you don't need to dedicate every inch of the paper to misery to convey that.
