I know we don't want to talk up second place.

But hadn't really thought about it that there's never been a single Champions League game at Tynecastle. Ever. Well done already Hearts.

As for next season. Playing on 4 fronts. CL is a casino. Buy big to gamble qualification?

I've seen Euro opposition that pass through us and you can't get the ball off them. Now imagine CL level. If we're gonna try we need better than Renaud and Glentoran's CH. No disrespect to either who might do well in the SPFL.

But the quality level as an example we need to bring in is 2m plus Robbie Ure type signings. We can't secure higher without bursting us. But it's this level to give us a shot in terms of a bit quality. But need a good few.

A decent centre half to replace Halkett also.

Ok. OK. I'll give you a name. But we need to be realistic in our pulling power even with CL. Plus salaries.

Alessandro Vogliacco. 6ft1 RCH. Italian..27yo. Year on his contract. Valued at 2.5m. Genoa.

Not getting a game at Genoa. Loaned to Parma now to PAOK in Greece but hasn't established himself. It's that type. If he was established we couldn't get him. Physical and dominant. Good control. Def upgrade on Halkett at home and Europe.

We're gonna need 4 or 5 like this plus Ageu, Chesnokov and Mato coming good. Just to have a small chance.

What a memory you have mate. He turned out to be a player we'd have loved. Luton captain and one of their best players in the end.

If I come up with a name from nowhere. And we go for him. And he signs. You'll NEVER hear the end of it. You have my word.

I don’t think we’re spunking £2.5m on a 27 year old CH mate, players like those will most likely be targeted when out if contract

Ouch, probably take Fenerbahce out of them tbh, on paper they probably look better but these Turkish retirement home teams are capable of being terrible.

I heard Sturm Graz as well?

Hopefully this focuses the mind a bit for the recruitment team - we need to give that tie a good go but also be strong for the qualifiers we drop into.

Whoever is second in the Austrian Bundesliga will be unseeded with us. They are actually playing their final games right now and yeah looks like Sturm Graz will be 2nd.

Some big names there. Quite Good

Obviously we'll get pumped by all shree of those teams, but a good test nonetheless.

I was thinking I think I’d prefer if we dropped down to the conference league next season, I think with the quality in there there will be more games where we can rotate the squad to keep us fresher for the league, the difference in prize money to the Europa League can be managed by going a bit deeper in the contest which isn’t unrealistic.

Is that a shit idea or not? Just the Champions League qualifiers will be too much and when you look at the teams in the top 24 of this seasons Europa League most would probably give us a bit of a hiding

100%. We also need to get our club coefficient bread up. 11.500 isn’t getting you seeded for league path qualifiers we need to play. Shamrock Rovers are on 17. Even Linfield are better than us right now.

I'd rather be on the end of some hidings in the Champions League or the Europa League than slipping through the Conference League.

Jezza

Just checked the revenue for qualifying for each group phase:

Champions League: 17.5m
Europa League: 7.7m
Conference: 4m

If by some miracle we make the CL group stages, we'd be looking at bringing in over 40 million pounds next season. Still only a fraction of what Celtic will make, but if we can run them this close on a sixth of their budget, imagine what we could do with about a third.

I know we're not likely to make the Champions League this time, but the Europa League group stages would bring in enough revenue to put us ahead of the rest if it's invested wisely. That's the foundation we need to make sure this season wasn't an anomaly but the start of something big.

Tbf all of these are thought exercises, because when the games roll around we'll all (realistically or otherwise) want the club to win them all, ergo we want to qualify for the Champions League. There probably is a case to be made that building the coefficient gives us more of a platform for future success and the JTA model is based on gradual progression rather than sudden big jumps. JTA probably also see us as having a ceiling, and while it's not clear where that is, it's fair to say they won't see us as a team that will ever regularly get results in the Champions League. I guess the way to look at it is that every outcome has its upsides - somehow get to the CL and we're unexpectedly rich (but get absolutely humiliated), get to the Europa League and we get a solid financial boost (but are unlikely to do much at all), get to the Conference League and the cash boost isn't huge (but we might get a few results).
